Senate Confirms Joash Amupitan as New INEC Chairman

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following a rigorous screening session held on Thursday in Abuja.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier nominated Amupitan to replace Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure recently came to an end.
During the plenary, the Senate Committee on INEC, chaired by Senator Sharafadeen Alli, presented its report recommending Amupitan’s confirmation, noting that he satisfied all constitutional requirements for the position.
In his presentation before the Senate, Amupitan pledged to strengthen the credibility and transparency of Nigeria’s electoral system.
“Our elections must not only be free and fair but must be seen by all Nigerians as transparent and trustworthy. I will work to restore public confidence in INEC and ensure that every vote truly counts,” he said.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, after a unanimous voice vote, declared Amupitan duly confirmed, urging him to uphold integrity and impartiality in the conduct of future elections.
“Professor Amupitan has an enormous task ahead. Nigerians are yearning for electoral justice and credibility. We expect him to rise to that challenge,” Akpabio said.
With his confirmation, Professor Amupitan becomes the 7th substantive Chairman of INEC, and he is expected to assume office immediately.
