A delegation of Igbo spiritual mothers has visited detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, expressing what it described as deep maternal concern and cultural responsibility.
The visit was led by Chief Mrs. Oliaku Chika Ibeneme, revered as Nne Mmanwu Igbo Niine (Mother of All Igbo Masquerades) and a former Commissioner for Works and Housing in Anambra State. She represented Ndi Nne Mụọ Ala-Igbo nile, a body of titled spiritual mothers drawn from different parts of Igboland.
In a statement made available after the visit, the delegation said it used the opportunity to offer prayers and convey spiritual encouragement to Kanu. The group described the engagement as part of its ancestral duty to stand in advocacy for justice, equity, and the wellbeing of the Igbo people.
Nationwide Consultations in View
The spiritual mothers also disclosed plans to initiate wider consultations with traditional rulers, respected elders, and other spiritual authorities across the country. According to them, the objective is to promote dialogue and rally moral support toward Kanu’s unconditional release.
They appealed to Nigerians, especially those from the South-East, to remain peaceful and united in lawful advocacy as legal proceedings continue.
Kanu remains in detention pending the outcome of ongoing court processes, with his case continuing to generate debate among socio-cultural and political groups nationwide.
